Enemy Territory: Quake Wars - Insights, Analysis, Intelligence

Head Up Display (HUD) and the Limbo Menu

Limbo Menu

The Limbo Menu lets you choose classes, weapons, and Spawn Points. You will probably start a game here and come back to it on regular basis to change classes, change Spawn Points, or check your Player Stats.

When you first join a game, you will first be taken to the Limbo Menu to choose a team and a class. Once you are in-game, use the L key at any time to access the Limbo Menu. The first thing you will see is the Command Map, showing you the battlefield and a listing of players on each side, their XP, and ping. The team counter shows number of Strogg and GDF players as well as the number of spectators. There are also tabs showing Player Stats, the Vote Menu, and a Server Admin control panel. To join a team or spectate, click one the three icons on the top left.

Class and Weapon Select Screen

Once you select a team, you will be taken to the class and weapon select screen. The Class Options panel shows the available classes and the number of players in each. A star above the class count indicates the class required to complete the current mission.

If you click on a class icon, you will get a quick overview of the class' role and a list of weapons options. Click on one of the weapons options and then click on Deploy to join the game. The bottom window shows the primary objectives for the map and status indicating which are completed.

You'll also notice a tab called Player Stats. That shows your Experience (XP) progression towards XP awards within a campaign. Those are more fully discussed in the Experience tab

Player HUD

The HUD gives you all the game information you need.

The first thing you might notice is that there is a lot of stuff going on in your player HUD. Rest assured, it's all valuable and useful information and you'll get used to it quickly enough. Going from top right, in a clockwise direction, this is what the screen is telling you:

  1. Mini Command Map (Minimap) shows you objectives, friendly players, and vehicles within a certain area. If your side has radar activated, you'll see enemy players as red dots. Your field of vision is shown by the white ghosted triangle. You can set the minimap to rotate or stay in a fixed orientation using g_rotateCommandMap 0/1 or set it from your UI.
  2. Respawn and game timer. Shows you number of seconds until the next spawn as well as time until the map is over.
  3. Objective Progress. For Construct, Hack, and Destroy objectives, you will see a progress bar showing % completion. Defuse progress is shown as a red bar overlaid on top of the Explosives Timer.
  4. Weapons inventory shows you the available weapons, items, and tools available to your class. If you don't need this AND if you aren't using the mouse to change weapons, you can use g_weaponSwitchTimeout 0. However, this will also disable the use of the mouse wheel to switch weapons. With this setting, you can only use the number keys or other custom key binds to select a weapon.
  5. Weapon status shows status of active weapons (could be as many as 3 in the case of Constructors and Engineers: weapon, turret, and mines). GDF players will see number of rounds left in the magazine as well as the number of rounds left in reserve magazines. Strogg only see the amount of stroyent left.
  6. Health, class, and XP is self-explanatory.
  7. Fire Team HUD shows the class and color coded health of your fire team members. Healthy members appear green, damaged members show in various shades of yellow and red based on severity. You can activate the fire team HUD by using KP_ENTER. If you don't wish to show the location of your fire team members, you can use the command, g_showfireteamlocation 0 in the console.
  8. Mission listing shows the current mission and amount of XP completion is worth. You can activate the task menu (M) to be assigned secondary missions.
  9. Inside the screen, you will also see icons for waypoints, objectives, and players.
